Rex's Birthday Dinner at Mr. Rockefeller Greenbelt 3

As its name suggests, Mr. Rockefeller is a fancy restaurant with a predominant emphasis on oysters and steaks. Most of the best restaurants in Makati City are located in Ayala Malls, and Mr. Rockefeller is no exception. Located at the Second Level of Greenbelt 3 Ayala Center in Makati City, it is well situated for the shopping pleasures of the designer brands of this famous area.

The menu was extensive with a touch of fine dining to it, yet the food was rustic and comforting and unpretentious. Rex, our birthday boy (this is his birthday treat to us by the way), ordered Brazilian Tenderloin (Php665.00) with rice and garden salad as side dishes.

I ordered Grandma’s Steak Recipe (Php495.00). I chose creamed style corn and mashed potatoes as my side dishes. It was quite flavorful and superbly tender.

Robert ordered this Boneless Bourdon Ribs (Php495.00) with rice and baked beans as side dishes. I had tried this and it’s really good. I love how the taste of BBQ sauce and the pineapple combined really well.

Mom ordered Baked White Fish (Php365.00). It’s a fillet of white fish with rich béchamel sauce, Parmesan and herbs, and served with vegetable rice. This actually taste good.

I wanted to try their Mango Panna Cotta but it’s not available, so I opted to go for Tiramisu (Php140.00) instead. It’s a dessert made of layers of sponge cake, mascarpone cheese, espresso, cream, and cocoa powder. And Rex chose to have New York Cheese Cake (Php140.00(below photo) topped with strawberries syrup for his dessert.

Mr. Rockefeller is a good place – very comfortable for a fancy place, food was good and offers excellent service. But it would be nice if they can make their food presentation a little more appealing. Price wise, I believe it’s a bit above average but worth it. If you notice, we didn't order any oyster-dishes. And that would be the reason why I am going back to try those oyster-based-dishes they have on their menu.

Yakimix Greenbelt 3: Good Food, Poor Service

We chose to dine at Yakimix Greenbelt 3 to celebrate my 3rd work anniversary and Donna’s birthday, but we ended up being treated poorly. Despite the good food and the elegant setting that exudes luxury with 2 massive chandeliers holding centre stage as they dazzle in front of our eyes, the service let our whole experience down. The staffs were snappish, and for most of the night they did their best to ignore us (including that lady at the dessert counter), and avoiding eye contact whenever possible. What a way to celebrate something huh? Anyway, like I said the food was good.

Buffets are all about eating until you're stuffed - and then eating some more of your favorite food - and at Yakimix, they have a sushi bar which was quite a treat for a Japanese food lover like me. Both the sushi and sashimi were tasty, fresh and nicely cut.

With different choices on offer, I tried a little of each, and all the food was delicious. We did a lot of smoke-less-grilling which was fun.

And they have quite scrumptious looking desserts. The dessert selection was plentiful with a large number of miniature options to choose from.

Overall, I’d still recommend Yakimix Greenbelt 3 for the good food and for the relaxed atmosphere that you don't need to worry about dress codes - flip flops and shorts won't draw any attention here. But despite the food, much more care is needed on the service. The management should be reminded that any member of staff has the power to enhance or ruin the reputation of their business.

Dinner at Don Henrico's, SM Mall of Asia

The last time Daniel was in the Philippines, we had dinner at Don Henrico's, a comfortable looking restaurant with a sense of warmth to its interior. Famous to its Italian food that perfectly suits the Filipino palate, this casual Italian restaurant is conveniently located at the Ground Level of South Entertainment Mall in Mall Of Asia Complex

The menu offers a collection of contemporary Italian dishes as well as seafood and meat platters for sharing. We started our meal with antipasti of Petite Mozzarella sticks (Php180.00) (Deep-fried mozzarella cheese coated in special Italian-seasoned breading; served with their marinara sauce) which was wonderful. I think this is exceptionally good.

I’d be honest, the reason we end up dining here is because of this Chicken Ala Buffalo (Php390.00 for 3pcs), I have read tons of good reviews online. I adored the harmony of flavors with the marinated chicken coated with tangy BBQ sauce and the creamy ranch dipping sauce. I can honestly say I've never eaten a buffalo chicken as good as this one. This is definitely a must try!

Their Fettuccine Alfredo (Share: Php240.00) was also wonderful with minced garlic sprinkled with Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley that was ever so yummy. Heads up, I'm somewhat biased when it comes to pasta.

We had Fudge Brownies ala Mode (Php160.00) for our dessert. The brownie is made with real chocolate, topped with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream, covered with hot fudge had a good flavor but was cooked at too high a temperature – so it melted. Nevertheless, it was still yummy.

Italian (…pasta….pizza) happens to be one of my favorite cuisines and I happen to be a little bit biased over the same. However only a few places have registered in my mind and this definitely happens to be one of them. The service was relatively decent considering we were there during dinner time (peak hour). I’d say it was sort of friendly and there was an authentic thoughtfulness to it that showed that the staff really cared for our comfort. Good food, great ambiance, very fair prices.

Buddy’s Pancit Lucban at Longganisang Lucban

Buddy’s Pancit Lucban at Longganisang Lucban is one of those restaurants in the city that offers authentic Filipino dishes. I feel bad that I am not quite familiar with this place. But thanks to my good friend, Len, for taking me here. Giving this place a shot was quite a treat!

Longganisa Lucban: I love sausages, chorizo, but haven’t tried a dry-version of longganisa. It’s a bit awkward and I feel bad considering I am a Filipino. Anyway, having this was completely new to me. It’s a bit dry, but it does tasted good after few bites. They have local vinegar that you can add to the longganisa to add more flavor.

Chopsuey: This is quite good with very fresh ingredients. For those of you who are not familiar with this dish (my foreigner friends), this is actually mixed cut up vegetable - whatever vegetables the restaurant wants to add. If you like vegetables, then you'll like it.

Free Soup and their famous house-spiced Vinegar for dipping. Len told me that you can actually add their vinegar in the pancit to make it more tasty. I'd try that next time. hehe!

I love colorful and well-designed restaurants. This place happened to be like that. Both the outside and interior design of this place is something new to me. This place would give you the same feeling like you were witnessing a "Pahiyas Festiva". The wood details, colorful paintings, and dim light makes your eating experience more enjoyable. They have an extensive menu so we'll definitely come back to try the other dishes.

Memories of Prony - The Giant Python in Albur Bohol

I found these photos while digging Daniel's album - it is what I always do when I miss my hubby. I remember I haven't posted anything about "Prony" yet. These photos were taken back in 2010, Daniel's first vacation in the Philippines - a trip right after his surprise wedding proposal on my Birthday that year.

With my EX-Boyfriend. lol

Prony, a female giant python was owned by Mr. Sofronio Salibay. I heard Prony was already 17 years old. She weighed about 270 kilograms (600 lb) and measured approximately 28 feet (8.5 m). The center of her body was measured at 34 inches. She was kept in a steel cage. She was the biggest python in captivity ever known. Prony was Albur's star and has known to the people as "Live Anaconda of Bohol." On a sad note, this friendly and gentle Giant Python died last August of 2013 due to an unknown illness.

Paris Délice: Authentic French Bread and Tasty Salads

Bonjour! Donna, Anna and I had a quick grub at Paris Delice on Saturday morning after work. We have walked by this place a million times, and finally decided to try it. I was very surprised. This is an amazing little place – a gem I would say. When you see this place, don't just walk by!

This French resto is conveniently located at 1 Juno Street, corner Makati Avenue, Makati City. Surrounded by many popular restaurants in Makati and patronized by foreigners (mostly French), I initially thought they are expensive. I was wrong! They are quite affordable and could actually battle-out some of their competitors around the area. Anyway, here’s what we had.

In an effort to be marginally more health-conscious, I opted to order their Salad Delice Set. For Php230, you’d have (1) salad, (1) drink – your choice, and (1) dessert – I had yogurt. I don't know how they jam so much salad into the container they give you, but it's more than enough salad to keep you satisfied. And their dressing is so good that I'd drink it if I could. Ha-ha! Hands down, my new favorite salad place, period.

Anna ordered their Breakfast Express Set. For Php130, you’d have (1) pastry, and (1) hot drink. Anna chose Pain au Chocolat (tastes really good – yes I had a bite haha), and Cafe Latte for her hot drink.

Our Miss Vegetarian, Donna, ordered Fruit Tart (Php70). It’s a perfectly sweet and satisfying pastry that’s easy to fall in love with. It’s available in mixed fruit, lemon, choco-banana, and apple.

You really can't go wrong here. The ambiance is fine, but the food is great. It really feels like it’s right out of France: authentic French Bread, pastries, sandwiches, and tasty salads, all at a very reasonable price! I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good French meal in Makati.

Exclusive Preview Screening of "Flowers in the Attic" By Nuffnang Philippines and Lifetime Asia

Yesterday I was lucky enough to be invited to witness the exclusive show preview of V.C. Andrews’ hit novel Flowers in the Attic before its TV premiere along with some other lovely bloggers. Nuffnang Philippines was too lovely to give me tickets for two (2). It was a very timely invitation because I was looking for something to do with my Mom while she's still with me here in Manila.
Though I was totally pissed being stuck in traffic for an hour on our way to the screening, it was totally worth it. The screening was at Glorietta 4 Cinema in Makati City on a somewhat gloomy night but that didn't dampen our spirits. The screening was hosted by Nuffnang Philippines and Lifetime Asia who provided us with snacks in a lovely-little-goodie-basket.

Flowers in the Attic is a 2014 Lifetime movie, based on V.C. Andrews' controversial cult-classic novel, "Flowers in the Attic" that follows the story of “The Dollanganger Siblings“, 12-year-old Cathy, 14-year-old Chris, and 4-year-old twins Carrie and Cory, as they embark on a life journey. After the unexpected death of their father, they were hidden in the attic of their ruthless grandmother, and faced cruel treatment from her.

So how was the movie you ask? We'll Mom and I both loved it. I have read the book back in college. Just like the book, Lifetime did a great job in making this film an astoundingly dark piece. Acting is superb, and the editing is excellent. If you’re not familiar with V.C. Andrews’ tale, Flowers in the Attic, you probably should be. It’s hands down one of the most frightening stories ever told. But it’s a typical in the fact that physical violence isn't the preferred method of fear tactic in this piece, so much as blatant neglect and grueling psychological torment. V.C. Andrews really did know how to stir things up and write memorable characters.

Thank you again, Nuffnang Philippines and Lifetime Asia, for inviting us and for the perks.

P.S. You can watch Flowers in the Attic on its TV debut on Aug 12 ONLY on LIFETIME - SkyCable Channel 65 (SD)/ Channel 199 (HD) OR Destiny Cable Channel 44 (Analog)/Channel 65 (Digital).

World Chicken: My Default Pasta Place

I have been trying to write a post about this place but never really had a chance to take photos of their food. World Chicken is one of my all-time favorite places to eat. Mind you, I hate eating in a food court. Why? Because I feel like people are watching me eat. ha-ha!

World Chicken offers cafeteria-style dining - they have a lot of branches within the Metro. I had tried the one in Pacific Star Building, and this one in Glorietta 4 Food Choices. Every time I’m here, the line seemed never-ending, pitying the other stalls nearby which were without customers.

For only Php172.00, you get to have a bone-less grilled chicken with your choice of World Chicken sauce (Farm Fresh Mushroom, Brown Gravy, Mornay Cheese, Ranch BBQ, Sweet Chili Sauce, Corn and Mushroom, Teriyaki and Taragon) plus 2 side dishes (Spaghetti Pomodoro, Fettuccine Al Tono, Pesto Cream, Asian Noodle, Mashed Potato, Bacon Rice, Japanese or Plain Rice, Espanol Rice, Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, Cheese Muffin, Fried Banana).

I ordered Grilled chicken with 2 sidings of Japanese rice and my favorite Fettuccine Al Tono. I chose Mushroom sauce as it really tastes like real sauteed mushrooms unlike other places that serve instant mushroom soup turned gravy.

Mary Jean ordered grilled chicken with Japanese rice and Macaroni Salad. She chose Brown Gravy for her sauce.

Rex ordered grilled chicken with Fettuccine Al Tono and Mashed Potato. He chose Corn and Mushroom for his sauce.

I won't say that this is the best chicken in the whole wide world but I can honestly say that it is one of the cheapest out there since it comes with combos like pasta and salad. Service was quite fast although you have to brave the long queue to get your food. Real value for money and better than other food stalls in any Malls. Damage to the budget will usually range from 172.00 pesos to 300 pesos! I highly recommend this place.
