Maleficent (2014) Movie Review

Two things; this movie truly serves as a perfect example of why Angelina Jolie is one of the most in-demand actors on the planet, and second, I am amazed on how Robert Stromberg wonderfully directed the movie. This is Stromberg’s debut film as a Director. He has had an impressive career to say the very least, and with Maleficent reaching $521 million, he has set the global box office record for the biggest-grossing live-action directing debut. *money-eyes*

Maleficent is a fantasy-thriller film that focuses on the Sleeping Beauty story, but from the perspective of the villainous Maleficent. It had twists and turns at every part and was very different from the "real" Sleeping Beauty. The story starts with showing us the happy-energetic-lively-powerful young Maleficent. She later met a young boy named Stefan. Friendship grows into love – but she got betrayed – and that’s how she turned into a villain. It’s ironic, that through this movie, we found out that the fairy tale character most committed to the destruction of true love turns out to have been one of its early victims. And oh, just a little spoiler, true love’s kiss in this movie isn't always what you think it will be.

This movie is filled with amazing actors who truly make the film. Angelina Jolie gives a legendary performance in this film. Just one look from her gives me so much chills. She is most definitely perfect for the role and adds a lot of character depth. (Am I making it too obvious that I am a die-hard Jolie fan? Sorry! Haha!) And yes, the casting for this movie is truly perfect, and the actors do not disappoint.

One of the best things about this movie is that it’s so relatable. Not in a fairy-power-ish way though. I meant, we all get hurt, and at some point in our lives we get blinded and lost in hatred and revenge. I love how they showed what is good, what is evil and how to find a way to make amends for wrongs that have happened.

Let me finish this review by saying this is a movie that is hard to find anything wrong with. From screenwriting, directing, aesthetics, acting, cinematography, editing, and make up – it’s just perfect. It’s a best retelling of a classic fairytale and a must see for adults and especially little girls. Well crafted all the way around. This is how good fairytales should be told and portrayed! I plan to see it again, in 3-D which I hear makes the movie even more amazing.
