El Chupacabra: The Hole-in-the-Wall Jewel in Makati

Located just at the heart of Makati's Central Business district, Bel-Air is I think a treasure trove and/or home to fancy restaurants, hole-in-the-wall joints, and everything else in between. And this is where you’ll find a true Mexican gem! Up for a generally-budget-friendly food trip? Here's my quick review of El Chupacabra, a must-try foodie destination at this neighborhood.

El Chupacabra prides itself in its authenticity, and is known for its street tacos that are worth the wait. The waiting part is not for me though! ha-ha! It’s a rustic haven with a menu that has ninety percent of its dishes priced below P200. It’s quite a find, if you’re looking to take a break from Makati’s expensive restaurants. The place, by the way, is named after the legendary crypid Chupacabra which means “goat-sucker”. But no worries, there are no goat suckers here! Anyway, here’s what we had.

For our starter, I ordered Chili con Carne and Tortilla Dipping Chips.

I also ordered Chicken Burrito. By rights, this is probably one of the best chicken burritos I’ve tasted.

Anna ordered Gonzo Adobo Chicken Rice and Eggs. She couldn't finish it, Donna and I thought we'd help out a friend in need. Ha-ha! This one is good. The ingredients were nothing too fancy, but were quite simple. They seemed to have gotten their combinations right.

Donna ordered Jalapeno and cheese Quesadillas. I fell in love with this one. Yes, we helped Donna finishing this one also. I'd put this in my fave list.

Our Miss Vegetarian, Donna, also ordered Vegetariano Wrap. She said it was so-so.

All in all, great place. One of the many reasons I love this place is the superb food, the expat-hangout-vibe, and the no-fuss ambience. I like places that I can totally relax without having to dress up, or act pretentious. El Chupacabra is a place where you can be yourself, and enjoy at the same time. If you are someone who hates waiting (like me), I suggest going here early or avoid lunch or dinner time.

Crab Mentality Among Filipinos: Excruciating Reality!

I had this awkward conversation with someone earlier regarding her friend. Awkward because nag tsismis lang si Ateng sa akin! I have been avoiding talking to those kind of people lately. Yong tipong mga tao na walang masabing maganda about other people. She truly reminds me of what I posted few years ago regarding crab mentality.

With all the good things one can possibly do, why do a number of Filipinos chose to downplay other people? Well hindi naman siguro Filipinos lang, but mostly kasi Filipinos ang nakikita ko na ganito ang ugali. Yes, misery loves company — but how can more be merrier in misery?

Crab mentality is a way of thinking best described by the phrase "If I can't have it, neither can you." The metaphor refers to a pot of crabs in which one tries to escape over the side, but is obstinately pulled down by the others in the pot. This is very common among Filipinos. There is this unwillingness in people to allow someone to get out of dire or bad life situations, often being obstructed by friends and family members who keep sucking them back in. It is a reflection of the famous saying we all like to see our friends get ahead, but not too far ahead”. Kakaloka diba? It is very disappointing and sickening, but it’s the ugly truth.

It’s very attention-grabbing how we practice bad things rather than good ones. Just like what my friend told me; don't try to squeeze your way out of it.... 'cause everyone else will just pull you back into the predicament but even deeper than before!

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

My view earlier - Gil Puyat Avenue and Makati Avenue Intersection

Hello my dear friends, what are you up to this weekend? Mom and I are watching few Korean Dramas, and probably going to visit my friend Rex at his place. I’ve had a cough, sore throat, fever, and foggy head all week, so I guess it would be great to get outside and do something fun. Anyway, I hope you all have a great weekend, and here are a few random links from around the web that you might want to check.

The civil aviation industry has suffered one of its worst weeks ever, with the loss of three airliners on three continents: Air Algerie Flight AH 5017, TransAsiaAirways domestic Flight GE222, and Malaysia Airways Flight MH17. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

Prince George, son of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge,
celebrateshis first birthday on Tuesday, July 22nd.

I think this Frozen Movie inspired video is quite amazing.

This Dog’s Final Day Proves: We Should Live Every Day Like It’s Our Last

I haven’t read the If I Stay book, and the movie trailer already made me cry.

The Fifty Shades of Grey trailer is finally here. The trailer is a clever tease; it’s more like foreplay, showing only a few shots of Christian Grey - the object of millions of women's fantasies around the world. Haha!

P.S. I have updated my list of Best Korean Drama for 2013 and 2014; you might want to check that by clicking this link here! Have a great weekend again. Thanks for the entire website visit this week.

Next Door Noodles by North Park: Lunch Date with Mom

Mom and I share one thing in common - we both love to eat. Whenever she's in Manila, I take her to my favorite places, and this place is one of them. I guess I have mentioned before that I'm a huge fan of Chinese, Korean and Japanese Cuisine! I could have them everyday for the rest of my life. And this place is by far one of the best Chinese restaurants that serve great tasting food, with big portions, fresh flavors and great prices!

Sweet and Sour Lapu-Lapu Fillet (Php253.00)

Lechon Macau BBQ Pork Belly (Php243.00)

Sweet Corn Soup (Php50.00)

Yang Chow Fried Rice (Php163.00)

Next Door Noodles is actually very similar to its sister restaurant, North Park. As a huge lover of Chinese food I highly recommend this place. Service here is quick which is a great factor considering the outlet is located around offices. It's a great place to grab a quick bite with family or friends while on a budget!

Maleficent (2014) Movie Review

Two things; this movie truly serves as a perfect example of why Angelina Jolie is one of the most in-demand actors on the planet, and second, I am amazed on how Robert Stromberg wonderfully directed the movie. This is Stromberg’s debut film as a Director. He has had an impressive career to say the very least, and with Maleficent reaching $521 million, he has set the global box office record for the biggest-grossing live-action directing debut. *money-eyes*

Maleficent is a fantasy-thriller film that focuses on the Sleeping Beauty story, but from the perspective of the villainous Maleficent. It had twists and turns at every part and was very different from the "real" Sleeping Beauty. The story starts with showing us the happy-energetic-lively-powerful young Maleficent. She later met a young boy named Stefan. Friendship grows into love – but she got betrayed – and that’s how she turned into a villain. It’s ironic, that through this movie, we found out that the fairy tale character most committed to the destruction of true love turns out to have been one of its early victims. And oh, just a little spoiler, true love’s kiss in this movie isn't always what you think it will be.

Ice Cream date at Swensen's in SM Mall of Asia

Daniel, my husband, told me to get an ice cream after my Physical Therapy session that day. Together with Mary Jane and Mom, we went straight to SM Mall of Asia to try something new. Yes, it’s something new that has been bothering me for days. hahaha

I saw a friend of mine posted a photo of an ice cream on Facebook – a beautiful looking ice cream. She told me it’s from Swensen’s. I have no idea about the place. So I did my research and found out that it’s actually a quite old ice cream chain that was established by Earle Swensen in San Francisco, California back 1948. It now has hundreds of stores in Asia, including the Philippines. Knowing that it is an American ice cream got me more curious, so we decided to give it a try.

I ordered Oreo Brownie (Php265.00). This is a crispy waffle basket served with chunky brownies, Oreo cookies and banana top with almonds and chocolate sauce. It is simply the perfect treat, and really a must try.

Mom ordered Oreo Cookies'n Cream (Php265.00). This is a cookies'n cream ice cream with hot fudge and Oreo cookies. The name alone drives me crazy. hahaha! ^_^

Mary Jean ordered Banana Split (Php270.00). This is a combination of Strawberry, Vanilla and Chocolate ice cream on banana with strawberry jam, pineapple jam, chocolate fudge and almonds. I always loved how banana split looks like.

Swensen’s is probably one of the best ice cream parlors I have been to in the Philippines. When I walked into the shop, I became a kid again. They have beautiful ambiance, and a wide variety of sundaes to choose from which leaves you wondering which one to pick. They also serve coffee and shakes just in case. The staff is really helpful. The price is leaning towards the higher end but when you are in a mood for some best sundaes, this is the place to be. I will definitely return here. I highly recommend this place to all my friends!
